This series of paintings comes from afternoon walks with my boys exploring the Dordogne countryside in late winter and early spring.
As the season changes, colors burst forth and new life appears. We're reminded of our own vibrancy and also how lucky we are to live somewhere so beautiful and peaceful.
I hope these paintings bring you a burst of freshness and joy.
I started by collecting photographs that captured the colors and feeling of the changing season. Crimson brambles, chartreuse catkins, deep blue stretches of river. I thought about the themes I wanted to capture and began to paint each painting one by one. This series is focused on resilience, possibility, and new growth.
Each painting begins with a pour of liquid paint or a single brushstroke. Once the main shape is in place, I layer ink and acrylic paint mixed with water and alcohol to create depth and contrast that reflects the shadows and light found in nature. The colors of each painting in this series reflect a particular moment of the season.
I finish each painting with a line or two drawn in pastel, a reference to our place in the landscape. We each have our own story to tell and mark to leave on the world.
